We are losing the ability to remember the future.
We might stand at a crossroads, where, for the first time in modern history, people are more pessimistic about the future than excited about it. And yet, only if we find ways to care about tomorrow are we able to bring the much-needed change forward.
Destinations and cultural institutions are asked to first reimagine what they want to become, and then regenerate, adapt, and transition into that new, protopian version. Quite often, destinations and institutions know what they don't want — overtourism, culture flattening, loss of local identity, positioning that attracts the wrong kind of visitors — less so, what they want and how to get there. Underneath the operational language of strategy and funding, one fundamental question remains unanswered: what future are we actually trying to arrive at, who is authoring it, and how can we reclaim local autonomy and sovereignty?

Destinations are being regenerated into places nobody recognizes anymore.
Conventional destination strategy works with what is visible and measurable. It produces plans that look coherent on paper, while often erasing what made the place worth protecting in the first place.
